All space cowboys have daddy issues, and Jacob is no exception. Heck, he's the metric.
Shepard is totally the aggressor here, which I suppose is one more reason why some ME2 players don't like Jacob.
Regardless, he's the only human male squad member in the entire game. You know. In case you're a Xenophobe.
